Why did many of Jesus' followers leave him?

Many of Jesus' followers left because they could not comprehend His statement about eating His flesh and drinking His blood. They took it literally and were offended, but they were ignorant of His true meaning, which was not about literal flesh and blood.

Les teaches that during Jesus' earthly ministry, He told them that unless they eat His flesh and drink His blood, they cannot partake with Him. Many of His followers reacted with disgust and left. They could not comprehend eating His flesh and drinking His blood, but they were ignorant; that isn't what Jesus was talking about. Les connects this to the Lord's table, noting that Jesus gave no explanation when He instituted the cup and bread, and no criteria for how to practice it until Paul explains it in the local church. The earlier picture of Melchizedek bringing bread and wine foreshadows the Lord's table.
