Les Feldick Bible Study

What kinds of things can become an idol in a believer's life?

Anything that a believer allows to take first place ahead of the Lord can become an idol. The context names automobiles, cattle, gardens, children, grandchildren, business, and jobs as examples. Paul’s admonition is to flee idolatry and let everything put the Lord first and foremost.

Les explains that when people say idolatry does not appeal today, they miss how ordinary idols can be. He imagines most idols in America sit in the garage, where the automobile simply becomes an idol. He also says cattle could become an idol, and the same is true of a garden, kids, grandkids, business, or job. Whatever it may be, it can become an idol. Paul’s admonition, therefore, is to look out and not let something become your idol, but to put the Lord first and foremost.

1 Corinthians 10:14

Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.
