What did God do to the Israelites who tested Christ?

According to Paul in I Corinthians 10:9, when some Israelites tested Christ, God destroyed them with serpents. He sent poisonous snakes among the camp, which bit and killed many, getting their attention. God then provided a brazen serpent on a pole so that those bitten could look and be healed.

Les teaches that Paul warns the Corinthians not to test Christ, as some Israelites did. When they tested Him, God destroyed them with serpents. Les explains that as a result of Israel's sin, God sent poisonous serpents among the camp. They bit the Israelites, causing swelling and death, which got their attention. The people asked Moses to intervene, so Moses went to God. God told him to put a brazen serpent on a pole, and anyone bitten who looked at it would be healed.

1 Corinthians 10:9

Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.
