Where did Joseph end up because of his brothers' sin?

Because of his brothers' sin, Joseph ended up down in Egypt. While he was there and the other brethren were in rebellion, God lost His chosen people, having lost control of them, so He would have to buy them back.

Les explains that all Scripture teaches the idea of something owned and then lost. Israel was God's covenant people until, because of the brothers' sin, Joseph ended up down in Egypt. While Joseph was in Egypt and the other brethren were in rebellion, God lost His chosen people and lost control of them. Therefore He had to buy them back, which is what the book of Exodus is all about—a book of redemption. He bought them back through the blood of the Passover lamb. In the same way, we today can be justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, as Romans 3:24 says.
