Why is the Holy Spirit in you?

The Holy Spirit is in the believer because of an act of God. Paul says the body is the temple, or dwelling place, of the Holy Spirit within you, and believers are not their own because they were bought with a price. Peter adds that redemption was not with corruptible things like silver and gold.

Les explains that Paul is arguing from the believer’s identity: the body is the temple, or dwelling place, of the Holy Spirit, and the Spirit is there because of an act of God. Therefore, the believer is not his own, for he was bought with a price. Les then turns to Peter to reinforce the same truth. Peter, a Jew writing to Jews, says they were not redeemed with corruptible things such as silver and gold, nor from the vain conversation received by tradition from their fathers. Les notes this refers to the traditions of Judaism and the Old Testament economy. The Spirit’s presence is therefore based on God’s act and the price paid, not on corruptible wealth or ancestral tradition.

1 Corinthians 6:19

What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
