Are Christians still under the Ten Commandments of Moses or under the Holy Spirit?
Believers are no longer under the demands of the Ten Commandments of Moses but are under the control of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit never leads a believer contrary to the law, so grace leads them to keep the law without the burden and fear of the law.
Les explains that Paul, being a Jew himself, can write that we should serve in newness of spirit and not in the oldness of the letter. This means we are no longer under those demands of the Ten Commandments of Moses; we are now under the control of the Holy Spirit. Les reasons that the Holy Spirit will never lead a believer to do something contrary to the law—never into adultery and never into idolatry. Without the burden of the law and the fear of breaking it, believers now have grace, and the Holy Spirit leads, guides, and directs them so that they keep the law under a whole different set of circumstances. Paul says all things are lawful for him because he is not under the law, but he will not be brought under the power of those things the law forbids, and so it should be with us.
But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
