If Christians are no longer under the Ten Commandments, what keeps them from being lawless?
The indwelling Holy Spirit becomes the believer’s law, replacing the Ten Commandments with something far better. The Spirit never contradicts God’s basic laws, so He will not lead a Christian to murder, commit adultery, steal, or destroy character through gossip. Therefore, freedom from the law does not produce lawlessness; it produces service in newness of spirit.
Les teaches that the Holy Spirit who comes in and indwells the believer becomes his law, so Christians do not become lawless just because they are not under the Ten Commandments. Something far better takes their place—the indwelling Spirit. The Holy Spirit never goes contrary to God’s basic laws: He will not instruct anyone to kill, break up a home by adultery, steal, or destroy a man’s character by gossiping. Les ties this to being delivered from the law, having died in old Adam’s crucifixion, so that believers should serve in newness of spirit and not in the oldness of the letter—the law, the Ten Commandments. Being dead to the law by the body of Christ, they are married to another, raised from the dead, to bring forth fruit.
