What does Paul require of a steward or manager in 1 Corinthians 4:2?

In 1 Corinthians 4:2, Paul requires that a steward or manager be faithful. A steward is a manager of a household or someone in control of something, and the essential qualification for the right kind of steward or good manager is faithfulness.

Les explains that Paul describes himself and other ministers as ministers of Christ and stewards of the mysteries. To understand the word steward, Les points back to the Old Testament example of Abraham's steward, Eleazar of Damascus, showing that a steward is a manager. He also notes that the word economy comes from the same root as steward, referring to one who manages a household or is in control of something. Then in verse 2, Les says the right kind of steward or good manager must be faithful.

Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.
