What does God say about the unbeliever who puts all his faith in the wisdom of this world?

God says the unbeliever who places all faith in the wisdom of this world has nothing, because all human wisdom amounts to nothing without God's wisdom. Such worldly wisdom is babble, not truth; the world's valuation is upside down, and no one should glory in men.

Les explains that there is a difference between a believer and an unbeliever. For a believer, education and a brilliant mind are fine and Christ honoring. But when the unbeliever places all his faith in his so-called wisdom of this world, it is nothing. Paul is driving at this truth. At Mars Hill, the Athenian philosophers called Paul a babbler, thinking his gospel was babble, but reality was the other way around: Paul had kernels of truth, while the philosophers had nothing but babble. The world has it all upside down. Verse 21 concludes that since all man's wisdom amounts to nothing without God's wisdom, no man should glory in men, for all things are yours in Christ. When we are in Christ, that makes all the difference.
