Why is the foundation so important in a building?

A building's foundation is its heart: a rotten foundation produces a rotten building in short order, while a solid, secure foundation means the rest of the building is apt to be the same. Spiritually, faith must rest on Christ crucified, buried, and risen, or one is hopelessly lost.

Les teaches that the foundation is the heart of any building, whether a home, business building, commercial building, or whatever. If the foundation is rotten, the building will be rotten in short order; but when the foundation is solid and secure, the rest of the building is apt to be the same. He then applies that analogy to faith: unless our faith rests upon the foundation Paul laid—which is Christ crucified, buried, and risen from the dead—we are hopelessly lost. Les notes that the world calls this exclusivism, and it is exclusivist, because there is no other name given among men whereby we must be saved. It is Jesus Christ plus nothing, and faith in that finished work.
