Where did Apollos come from and where was he educated?
Apollos came from Alexandria. He was likely well educated by the same group in Alexandria that translated the Hebrew Old Testament into Greek. He was also instructed in the way of the Lord, being fervent in the Spirit, though he knew only the baptism of John.
Les explains that Apollos was an eloquent man, mighty in the Scriptures. Since the early church only had the Old Testament and nothing of the New Testament was written yet, Apollos came from Alexandria, and Les thinks he was probably quite well educated from the same group that translated the Hebrew Old Testament into Greek. This eloquent, well-mannered, gifted man came to the church at Ephesus. He was instructed in the way of the Lord, fervent in the Spirit, and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John. Les points out that Apollos knew none of Christianity because the Gospel of the Kingdom preached by Jesus and the twelve was still basically Jewish and connected with Temple worship.
And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus.
