Is there Church doctrine in the Gospels?
No. There is no Church doctrine in the Gospels. They are still for the believer’s learning and application, yet they are not the source of doctrine for the Church. The Old Testament and Gospels are for learning, but Church doctrine is not found in the Gospels.
Les teaches that there is no Church doctrine in the Gospels, and he makes no apology for stating that. However, that does not mean the Gospels should be ignored; they are still for the believer’s learning, study, and application. He notes that when Paul wrote his epistles, he does not think the Gospels had even been written yet, and they certainly had not come together as Scripture. So when Paul speaks of Scripture or things written aforetime, he is referring to the Old Testament. Everything written before Paul wrote is for the believer’s learning, and Les says the same applies to the Gospels. He clarifies he has never told anyone not to read the Old Testament or the Gospels. As an example of application, Jesus told the Twelve they were the light of the world, like a city on a hill. Israel was promised that role but rejected it, so by application believers today are the light of the world.
