Les Feldick Bible Study

What is the human response when someone wrongs you, and how should a Christian respond?

When someone wrongs you, the human response is to do them dirt in return. The Christian principle is not retaliation but to provide things honest in the sight of all men, not out to get them or take advantage, but to be a square dealer.

Les teaches from Romans 12:17 that our attitude toward those around us—not just in the local church but in the community—should reflect the Christian principle. The human response when someone does you dirt is to do them dirt in return, but that is not the Christian way. Instead, we are to provide things honest in the sight of all men. Les illustrates this by saying he would rather charge $5 too little than overcharge by $5, emphasizing that we are not out to get others or take advantage, but to be a square dealer. He also notes that verse 18 is often misunderstood as requiring Christians to let people do whatever they want, and he calls it a loophole.

Romans 12:17

Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
