What does it mean that believers have been metamorphosed like a butterfly?
Believers have undergone a real inward transformation, pictured by a cocoon becoming a butterfly. The old life is left behind, and the new life is to display a different, beautiful nature. This change is not produced by works, religion, or human effort; only God can touch that invisible part and accomplish it.
Les explains that believers have been transformed and metamorphosed, just like a cocoon turning into a butterfly, and Paul is reminding us of this. A butterfly is not expected to look like an old vulture; it is the innocent, fluttering beauty it was made to be. In the same way, believers are to be transformed and different from what they were before. This does not take place by works. Les uses the illustration of a dead car battery: if the lights were left on, you do not clean the outside with warm soapy water and a rag to give it a charge. You can wash it until doomsday, but power must come from an outside source. So works religion is doomed to failure, because no preacher, teacher, priest, denomination, or religion can touch the invisible part of a person’s make-up. Only God can, because He is the Creator of that invisible part.
