What does Romans 6 teach about being identified with Christ?
Romans 6 teaches that believers are identified with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection. Just as Christ was crucified on the Roman cross, you and I have been crucified. Paul connects this to Galatians 2:20: the believer has been crucified with Christ, yet lives by the faith or faithfulness of Christ.
Les explains that after being justified by faith and having peace with God, Romans 6 goes through the whole idea of being identified with Christ—death, burial, and resurrection. Just as surely as Christ was crucified on that Roman cross, you and I have been crucified. Paul brings this to light in Galatians 2:20: 'I have been crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live. Yet the life I now live, I live by the faith, or the faithfulness, of him who loved me, and gave himself for me.' All of this is what Paul is making reference to. Les then notes the transition into chapter 7 and the dilemma every one of us faces: the things we know we should do, we don't; the things we know we shouldn't do, we do. Paul ends chapter 7 saying, 'Oh wretched man that I am, who can deliver me?' Les then moves to chapter 8, verse 1, which he says is the chapter they are studying.
