Did God abandon Israel after they rejected and crucified Jesus?

No. Scripture promises Israel a king and kingdom; they rejected and crucified Him, but He returned to glory and will come back. Hosea 6:1 declares that though He has torn and smitten them, He will heal and bind them up.

Les explains that God had promised Israel a king and kingdom, but when the Messiah came the first time, Israel rejected Him and crucified Him, and He returned to glory. Yet God did not forget Israel. Les compares it to MacArthur leaving the Philippines and saying, 'I will come back,' which is exactly what Jesus told the Twelve on the Mount of Olives: He is going back to heaven, but He is coming back. The angel also announced it. Israel is now approaching the day their Messiah will return. In Hosea 6:1, God's promise to the nation is that though He has torn and smitten them in discipline, He will heal and bind them up. So God has not abandoned Israel; He disciplines them but promises restoration.
