For whom did Christ taste death?
Scripture teaches that Christ tasted death for every man, not merely for the few who believe. He died for the whole human race, extending reconciliation to all, as God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself. This reflects the scope of the cross: not limited to a select group.
Les explains that reconciliation means taking two parties that have been alienated and at odds and bringing them back into fellowship. The world is set aside from God, at odds with Him, and enemies of God, yet God has done everything possible to reconcile them to Himself. God was in Christ reconciling not a few but the world, not imputing their trespasses. The work of the cross was the reconciling of the whole world. Hebrews says Christ tasted death for every man, not just the few believers, but for the whole human race. As ambassadors in foreign territory, we carry out God's bidding.
But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
