What did Elijah do at Mount Carmel at the end of the drought?
At the end of the three-year drought, Elijah gathered all the Israelites and the prophets of Baal together on Mount Carmel. Northern Israel was burned up with lack of water, and this assembly occurred on Mount Carmel, which juts in from the Mediterranean Sea, just south of Haifa.
Les explains that Elijah's setting was during the reign of wicked King Ahab and his wife Jezebel, who promoted Baal worship and idolatry in the northern kingdom. Elijah had caused no rain for three years, producing an utter drought, yet Ahab and Jezebel would not change. By the end of that drought, northern Israel was burned up with lack of water, so Elijah got all the Israelites and the prophets of Baal together up on Mount Carmel. Les notes that Mount Carmel juts in from the Mediterranean Sea, just south of present-day Haifa, and when you drop off Mount Carmel you go down to the valley of Jezreel, or Armageddon, where the final great battle will someday be fought.
Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel’s table.
