What happened when Elijah called on Jehovah on Mount Carmel?

When Elijah called on Jehovah, fire came down, consuming the sacrifices and even licking water out of the trenches. This proved to Israel that Jehovah was still the God of Israel, and Elijah then demanded the 400 prophets of Baal be killed.

Les explains that Elijah set up a test on Mount Carmel with the prophets of Baal. The sacrifices were soaked with water and the trenches filled, then Elijah taunted Baal's prophets to call on their god. Nothing happened; he mocked that their gods were sleeping. When Elijah called on Jehovah, the God of Israel, fire came down. It consumed the sacrifices and literally licked the water out of the trenches, proving Jehovah was still Israel's God. Elijah then demanded that the 400 prophets of Baal be killed, and they were. A messenger took off from Mount Carmel across the valley to Jezreel and told Jezebel, who threatened that Elijah would be dead by the next day. Les notes that despite such manifestations, Israel could quickly sink into unbelief, and even Elijah did.
