What does Peter tell us to do with the rock of offense and stone of stumbling?
Peter directs believers to put their faith in the rock of offense and stone of stumbling, Jesus Christ, and to let Him be precious. Believing on Him keeps them from being disappointed or confounded; rejecting Him leads instead to disappointment.
Les explains that Scripture says God lays in Zion a chief cornerstone, elect and precious, and that the one who believes on Him—that stone, Christ—shall not be confounded, or as Les puts it, disappointed. Peter's instruction is to put faith in the rock of offense and the stone of stumbling and to let Him be precious; otherwise the outcome is disappointment. Les points out that many people, even in churches on every corner, slip into eternity thinking they are going the right direction, but they will be disappointed. Peter does not repeat Acts 2:38's command to repent and be baptized for remission of sin; instead, he now says the position of not being disappointed is attained by believing. Verse 7 is therefore unto you who believe.
Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
