Who is the stone of stumbling mentioned in Romans 9?
The stone of stumbling is Christ, Jesus of Nazareth. Israel stumbled because they sought it not by faith but by works of the law. He remains the stone of stumbling for the world today, and whoever believes on Him shall not be ashamed.
Les teaches that the stone of stumbling is Christ, Jesus of Nazareth—for Israel then and still for the world today. Israel missed it because they sought it not by faith but as it were by works of the law, stumbling at that stumbling stone. Les says people stumble over the precious truths concerning Christ and His finished work of the cross. Verse 33 calls Him a stumbling stone and rock of offense in Zion, yet whoever believes on Him shall not be ashamed. Les also notes that Scripture presents Christ in various aspects of a stone, but here He is specifically the stone of stumbling.
As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
