Can a person be zealous in church attendance and still be ignorant of the Bible?
Yes. Paul bears record that they have a zeal of God but not according to knowledge. That is the problem with much of Christendom: they may never miss a church service and be there every day the door is open, yet have no knowledge of Scripture and are totally ignorant.
Les explains that Paul, writing to the Gentile believers at Rome, says his heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they might be saved, and he would even give up his own salvation if Israel could be saved. In verse 2 Paul writes, "For I bear them record, that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge." Les says that although Paul is talking about the Jew, this is also the problem with most of Christendom today. They may have a zeal and may never miss a church service, even being there every day the door is open, but they have no knowledge of Scripture and are totally ignorant. Les illustrates this with a couple who came into one of his classes. The wife was proud and said she had been a Sunday school teacher in the First Church of Oklahoma City for 30 some years and knew her Bible. She returned the next week and repeated it word for word, but by about the fourth week, with no pomp or puffiness, she said, "I never knew I was so ignorant." Les says praise the Lord, because when we realize we do not know it all, that is when we begin to learn, and he is in no different situation even yet.
For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.
