How many people remained true to God at the time of the flood?
Scripture indicates that eight people remained true to God at the time of the flood. This small remnant stood apart from the vast population of the earth, illustrating the doctrine of the remnant that runs through Scripture, where God preserves a faithful few rather than the majority.
Les teaches a doctrine of the remnant, noting that all through Scripture God has never enjoyed the majority; it has always been a small remnant. He points to the flood as perhaps the first example. Out of all the billions of people he thinks were on the earth at that time, only eight remained true to God. Even some of those eight became rather despicable afterward, yet nevertheless only eight made up that tiny remnant. Later, when the nation of Israel comes into view, the Word would light on Jacob, the whole nation, but only a few out of Jacob would respond and believe, and they were usually referred to as Israel. God has always had His remnant, even within the nation of Israel.
