To what extent did Israel fulfill the call to be a light to the Gentiles?

Israel fulfilled the call only partially. They did to a certain extent, since every word of the book was written by Jews, but God intended even more for the nation. Because they rejected it in unbelief, God sent Israel into dispersion, removing their temple and land.

Les explains from Isaiah 49:6 that God said it was a light thing for His servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the preserve of Israel. Les notes that Jacob was the nation as a whole, but Israel was the believing remnant. God would also give him as a light to the Gentiles, extending salvation to the end of the earth. Israel was to have had that opportunity, and to a certain extent they did, because every word of the book was written by Jews. But God had even more than that for the nation. Les teaches that they rejected it in their unbelief, though God's idea was to go to the Gentile world through this covenant people. When Israel was constantly rejecting it, He had to send the nation into dispersion, taking away their temple and land. God from the beginning knew the day would come when He would go to the whole Gentile world with His salvation.
