How did Israel respond to their role of reaching the Gentiles?
Israel completely rejected the role Jehovah intended—to be His vehicle to reach the Gentiles. When the apostle mentioned Gentiles, they rioted, demanded he be removed from the earth, and said it was not fit that he should live. They fought him every inch of the way and would not permit him to go to the Gentiles.
Les explains that the Jewish audience listened intently until they heard the word "Gentile," and then a riot erupted. They lifted up their voices, saying, "Away with such a fellow from the earth, it's not fit that he should live." They reacted that way because he so much as even thought Gentile. Israel had been completely blinded to her true role Jehovah had intended—to be His vehicle to go out and reach the Gentiles—and had completely rejected it in unbelief. They would not even permit this apostle to go to the Gentiles and fought him every inch of the way. Les notes he is not putting down the Jewish nation; this was the result of years of being taught they were God's special covenant people, which controlled their thinking so they never saw why God called them out. The last statement of the Abrahamic covenant was that in Abraham all families of the earth would be blessed, which would come about by their Messiah being crucified and becoming the object of faith for Israel and the whole world.
