What could God have done to the human race at the cross?

At the cross, God could have cleansed the earth of the whole human race, since in any other circumstance He would have had to destroy the human race, Israel, and individuals. Instead, He withdrew into His sovereignty and poured out mercy on the whole human race, not just Israel.

Les explains that at Calvary, Israel demanded Christ's death and Rome pounded spikes into His hands. God could have simply cleansed the earth of the whole human race, and in any other circumstance He would have had to destroy the human race, Israel, and even you and me. But He withdrew into His sovereignty and, as Christ hung on the cross, poured out mercy—not only for Israel but for the whole human race. This was solely because He is sovereign. Even today, God continues to offer salvation to the human race, and what restrains Him from doing to society what He was about to do to Israel is His sovereign grace.
