What can God pour out on the human race as a result of the cross?
As a result of the work of the cross, God can pour out living water on the human race. The rock that Moses smote typified the smitten Christ, and because He was crucified once for all, living water flows from that finished work.
Les explains that Israel under Moses ate the same spiritual food (manna) and drank the same spiritual drink from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. When Moses took the shepherd's rod and smote the rock, he was smiting Christ—the smitten Christ—as Isaiah 53 foretold, smitten for our transgressions and referring to the cross. Les teaches that as a result of the work of the cross, God can now pour out living water on the human race. Christ was crucified once, not repeatedly, and Hebrews emphasizes that He entered in once, unlike the high priests who did this over and over. The once-for-all sacrifice of Christ is the basis for God pouring out living water.
