Did believers become part of God's family by accident?
Scripture teaches that believers did not come into their exalted position by accident. They came into this position because, in eternity past, God chose them. This election and calling is a doctrine for the believer to take by faith; God said it, and it cannot be argued with. The unbeliever cannot comprehend it.
Les explains that the verses dealing with election and the calling of believers since eternity past are hard to teach because people confuse the issue, thinking election means they have no choice. But the Bible never teaches that. For the believer, God wants us to know that in our exalted position we didn't come in by accident. We came into this position because in eternity past God chose us. This is something only the believer can take by faith. God said it, and we can't argue with it. The unbeliever can't comprehend this, and it isn't for the unbeliever to try to swallow. The unbeliever has to understand whosoever will may come, that God is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance, and that Christ died for every man.
