What was David's family situation when God made the Davidic covenant in 2 Samuel 7?

At the time of the Davidic covenant in 2 Samuel 7, David was already king, had committed adultery, and Bathsheba had become his wife. He had sons Solomon and Nathan. God was establishing the royal family beginning with David and continuing through Bathsheba's two sons, Nathan and Solomon.

Les explains that 2 Samuel 7 records the Davidic covenant. He notes that David had already committed the sin of adultery, Bathsheba had now become his wife, and he had Solomon and Nathan. Les says God was looking at this royal family that would begin with David, go down to Solomon, and then to Bathsheba and David's two sons, Nathan and Solomon. That genealogy continues through history to Joseph and Mary. Les adds that it almost seemed the line would be broken during the Babylonian captivity, but God preserved it until Christ was born.
