What does the Davidic covenant mean?
The Davidic covenant is the covenant God made with David concerning his offspring, the nation of Israel. It concerns the royal line of David's house, which would lead to the coming King, the Christ, the Messiah, coming through Solomon and Nathan. Though God would chasten Israel for iniquity, there is a flip side to that chastening.
Les teaches that the Davidic covenant, found in II Samuel chapter 7, simply means it was a covenant God made with David concerning his offspring, the nation of Israel. It speaks of the royal line of the house of David, which would lead up to the coming of the King, the Christ, the Messiah. That line would come down through Solomon on one side and Nathan on the other. In verse 14, God says, "I will be his father, he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men." Though it sounds like He is only addressing Solomon, He is looking at the long view of the whole nation of Israel. He would chasten the nation of Israel by their enemies and other ways. Then comes the word "But," showing the flip side: yes, He will chasten them and deal harshly with them when they come into unbelief and abject behavior.
