How long were the Israelites in Egypt, and how many left when Moses led them out?

The children of Israel were in Egypt for about 215 years. When Moses led them out, they numbered a company of anywhere from 5 to 7 million people. At that time, they were the greatest number of any one nation in that part of the world.

Les explains that after some 215 years of the children of Israel in Egypt itself, Moses leads them out as a company of anywhere from 5 to 7 million people. For that period in time, this made them the biggest nation in the then-known world—not by our standards, but by those standards they were. They were the greatest number of any one nation in that part of the world. This followed God's word to Jacob not to be afraid to go down into Egypt, for there He would make of him a great nation.
