Les Feldick Bible Study

How long were the children of Israel in Egypt and how many people came out with Moses?

The children of Israel were in Egypt for about 215 years. When Moses led them out, they numbered a company of anywhere from five to seven million people. At that time, this made them the largest nation in the known world, though not by modern standards.

Les explains that God had earlier told Abraham and Isaac not to go into Egypt, but He told Jacob not to be afraid to go down, because there in Egypt He would make of him a great nation. That is exactly what happened. After some 215 years of the children of Israel being in Egypt itself, Moses led them out as a company of anywhere from 5–7 million people. For that period, they were the biggest nation in the then-known world, the greatest number of any one nation in that part of the world, though not by our standards.
