How long were the children of Israel in Egypt, and how many people did Moses lead out?
The children of Israel were in Egypt itself for some 215 years. When Moses led them out, they had become a company of anywhere from 5 to 7 million people, making them the greatest number of any one nation in that part of the then-known world.
Les explains that God had told Abraham and Isaac not to go into Egypt, but He told Jacob not to be afraid to go down, for there in Egypt He would make of him a great nation. That is exactly what happened. After some 215 years of the children of Israel in Egypt itself, Moses led them out as a company of anywhere from 5 to 7 million people. Les notes that for that period in time, they were the biggest nation in the then-known world. Not by our standards, but for those standards they were, being the greatest number of any one nation in that part of the world.
