What do the verses in Romans 8 say about assurance of salvation?
Romans 8 teaches believers can be assured of salvation because Christ died, rose, and intercedes at God’s right hand. He watches over and promises, asking, “Who can be against you?” Troubles and Satan may attack, but God remains sovereign, and no tribulation can separate the believer from Him.
Les explains that Christ’s divine blood had to be shed, because without the shedding of blood there is no remission. He died, rose from the dead, and is at God’s right hand interceding for us; He watches over us and has promised, “Who can be against you?” Les warns not to interpret this to mean nothing bad can happen to a believer, for Satan can transform himself into an angel of light and confuse the issues. But believers can rest on these promises because God is still in total control and sovereign. Les notes that these verses disturb those who think you cannot be assured of salvation, who feel you must hope you make it, work hard to hang on, and never sin in a way that would lose salvation and end in hell. These verses fly in the face of that thinking, showing assurance and asking who shall separate us—even tribulation.
Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth.
