Les Feldick Bible Study

Why can't we fix our own weaknesses ourselves, and what should we do instead?

We cannot fix our own weaknesses because they belong to the invisible realm of the Spirit, and our infirmities require help beyond ourselves. The indwelling Holy Spirit helps our weaknesses, so instead of trying to handle them alone, we should let God do it, waiting patiently in faith and hope.

Les explains from Romans 8:26 that the Holy Spirit, now indwelling believers according to Paul’s teaching, helpeth our infirmities—our weaknesses. Because these weaknesses are handled in the invisible realm of the Spirit, there is not much we can do about them ourselves. The remedy is not self-effort but surrender: let God do it. This fits the context of faith and hope, where believers wait patiently for what they do not yet see, not pushing God to act faster, knowing He will bring everything to fruition and Christ will return.

Romans 8:26

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
