Why are we separated from God according to Scripture?

Scripture teaches that separation from God comes through the fall of Adam, the federal head of the whole human race. Consequently, everyone has come short of the glory of God and cannot enter God's heaven unless God does something on their behalf; recognizing this lostness is the first step of faith.

Les explains that a helpful witnessing question is, “Why should God let you into His heaven?” because it lets people express their own reasons, and they invariably overlook Romans 3. He teaches this is the very first step of faith on the road to salvation: recognizing that in ourselves we are lost, like sheep without a shepherd. The separation is because of the fall of Adam, who was the federal head of the whole human race. Scripture says everyone has come short of the glory of God, meaning no one can enter God's heaven unless God does something on our behalf.
