Do you need to understand deep doctrine to be saved?

No. A person who is untaught in Scripture does not have to know all the deep doctrinal truths in order to be saved; those truths are written to believers. After salvation, God expects His child to learn, grow, and understand what He has done on their behalf.

Les explains that Paul writes only to believers, not to the unsaved world. That does not mean his letters are inappropriate for the unsaved, but he is writing to believers. Paul delves into deep ramifications of how we died with Christ and were raised with Him, yet Les asks whether we must know all these things for salvation, and answers no. A new person totally untaught in the Scriptures, knowing nothing of these things, does not have to know all these deep doctrinal truths to be saved. Once we become a child of God, however, God expects us to learn, grow, and get a graphic understanding of all God has done on our behalf. That is what makes us what we are. Les sees this as a problem in mainstream Christianity: many have only the elementaries and never go into the deeper things, so they lack understanding of the deep doctrines Paul was privileged by the Holy Spirit to give in his letters to us believers.
