Les Feldick Bible Study

Does putting God first mean you can't enjoy life?

No. Seeking first the kingdom and setting affection on things above does not require withdrawing to a monastery or becoming a monk. God has given blessings to enjoy, and believers can enjoy life to the full, while keeping heaven as the first priority and interest.

Les explains from Colossians 3:1-2 that being risen with Christ should change our appetites and desires, so we seek things above, which are eternal. He connects this to Jesus' earthly ministry: “Seek ye first the kingdom of heaven, and all these other things will be added unto you.” Les stresses priorities, especially to young people. He clarifies that getting priorities straight does not mean going into a monastery and becoming nothing but a monk; you can enjoy life to the full. God has given blessings to enjoy, but priority speaking, heaven is where our first interest is. Setting affection on things above, not on things on the earth, contrasts with a society focused on things, which perish. He illustrates with wanting a particular car, finally getting it, and finding anticipation more exciting than realization; with eternal things, anticipation is great but realization will be greater.

Colossians 3:1

If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
