What happens when we become in union with Christ?
When believers enter union with Christ, they remain distinct entities but become one with Him, likened to husband and wife becoming one in marriage. This spiritual union is comprehended by faith, as God reveals the relationship between Christ and members of His body.
Les explains that Paul, by inspiration in Ephesians 5, shows Christ’s relationship to believers as members of the Body of Christ is identical to the husband-and-wife relationship. In a marriage made in heaven, a husband and wife are two people, yet they become one; wedding ceremonies often picture this by blowing out two candles and lighting one. Likewise, when we become in union with Christ, we are two separate entities, but once we have entered in and enjoyed this position in Christ, we become one with Him, like husband and wife. Les says this is a deep concept, entirely in the spiritual realm, and the only way we can comprehend it is by faith. The Book teaches it, so we must believe it, and that is what God expects. Les also points to Deuteronomy 29:29: the secret things belong to the Lord our God, but once they are revealed, they belong to us and our children forever. God is revealing a relationship not only between husband and wife but between Christ and believers as members of His body.
