How can we understand our spiritual union with Christ?

Our spiritual union with Christ is understood by faith, not by human reasoning. Scripture reveals that though we are separate entities, once we enter into Christ we become one with Him, just as husband and wife become one. This deep relationship is spiritual, and Scripture teaches we must believe it because God expects it.

Les explains that Paul, by inspiration, uses the marriage relationship to illustrate Christ’s relationship to the members of His Body. In a heaven-made marriage, two people become one, as wedding ceremonies sometimes picture by blowing out two candles and lighting one. Likewise, when we become in union with Christ, we are two separate entities, but once we enter into that position in Christ, we become one with Him, like husband and wife. This is a deep concept, entirely in the spiritual realm, and the only way we can comprehend it is by faith. Les points back to Deuteronomy 29:29: the secret things belong to the Lord our God, but once they are revealed, they belong to us and our children forever. God is revealing a relationship not only between husband and wife but between Christ and believers as members of His body, and it is the same.
