Does the Holy Spirit live in you if you believe the gospel?
Yes. Scripture indicates that if you have believed the Gospel—the truth of it—the Holy Spirit is in you. The indwelling Holy Spirit is evidence that you are not in the flesh or under Adam’s control, and being in the Spirit confirms you are a believer, in Christ, forgiven, and a new creation.
Les explains that Romans 8 and Ephesians 1 teach the same truth: a person who has believed the Gospel is not in the flesh or under Adam’s control if the indwelling Holy Spirit is evident. He says if you have believed the truth of the Gospel, the Holy Spirit is in you; if the Holy Spirit is in you, you are a believer. This leads to the same conclusion: you are in Christ, there is now no condemnation, Paul says all trespasses are forgiven, and we are a new creation. Les emphasizes that Scripture must speak for itself, pointing to 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 and the Gospel that Christ died for all and rose again.
