How does the indwelling Holy Spirit change a Christian's desires?
The indwelling Holy Spirit becomes the believer's guideline for Christian living, not cold rules but His influence and power. Being warm and loving, He gives first and foremost the desire to live pleasing in God's sight and takes away the desire to be rebel, obnoxious, and wicked. This is His work, not ours.
Les explains that the Law sat in cold stone, severe and condemning, and did nothing to help a person keep it. The Law was like a mirror: it could show what was wrong and needed cleaning, but it could never reach out and clean anyone. The indwelling Holy Spirit, by contrast, is warm, loving, and embraces us. As He does so, He gives the desire first and foremost to live pleasing in God's sight, and He takes away the desire to be a rebel, obnoxious, and wicked. This transformation is the work of the indwelling Holy Spirit, not me or you.
