Does the Bible teach that Christ's relationship to believers is the same as a husband and wife relationship?
Yes. Paul writes in Ephesians 5 that Christ's relationship to members of His Body is identical with the husband-wife relationship. Just as husband and wife become one, believers in union with Christ become one with Him. This spiritual union is understood by faith, and Scripture teaches it.
Les explains that in Ephesians 5:25, Paul by inspiration sets forth the husband's responsibility, but the deeper point is that Christ's relationship to believers as members of the Body of Christ is identical with the relationship of husband and wife. In a marriage made in heaven, two people become one, and many wedding ceremonies picture this by blowing out two candles and lighting one. Les teaches it is the same when we become in union with Christ: we are two separate entities, but once we have entered in and enjoyed our position in Christ, we become one with Him. This is a deep concept in the spiritual realm, comprehended only by faith. The Book teaches it, so we must believe it. Les also references Deuteronomy 29:29, that secret things belong to the Lord, but once revealed they belong to us and our children forever. God is revealing a relationship not only between husband and wife but between Christ and members of His body, and it is the same thing. Then verse 25 says, "Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also."
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
