How do most people respond to God's commands and prohibitions?
Most people respond to God's commands by doing the opposite, and to His prohibitions by doing them anyway. They reject what God says is for their good and pursue what He warns will bring sorrow and heartache, because the old Adamic nature and Satan urge them to just do it.
Les teaches that this is the same pattern seen in the Christian experience. Paul writes in Romans 7 that when he does what he would not, he consents that the law is good, because he is rebelling against the good statements of the law. Old Adam says, forget the law; that is God's side, and we are anti-God. Les points out that everything God says in the Bible for mankind to do for his own good, most of mankind does the opposite. Everything the book warns us not to do, mankind in general does it. The popular cliche 'just do it' illustrates the old Adamic nature taking sway of a life when God's Word says something is harmful and will bring sorrow and heartache, but Satan and the old nature say, 'but do it, everybody else is.' That does not make it right.
