What must happen to old Adam before we can be married to Christ?
Old Adam must be crucified and put to death, breaking him from the demands of the Ten Commandments and the Mosaic law, so that the believer is delivered from the law and can be married to Christ. This union is like husband and wife, serving in newness of spirit by the Holy Spirit.
Les explains that Paul's analogy presents marriage to Christ as a union like husband and wife. He points to Ephesians chapter 5, where Christ loved the church and husbands are told to love their wives. Before that union, old Adam must be crucified and put to death so he is broken from the demands of the Ten Commandments and the Mosaic law. Then, as chapter 7, verse 6, says, being dead to the law, we are delivered from it and serve in newness of spirit—the Holy Spirit.
