What does it mean that Israel was baptized unto Moses?

The nation of Israel was totally engulfed in Moses' leadership. The Greek word for baptized implies being totally engulfed, not necessarily by water. So Israel coming out of Egypt was pictured as completely immersed in Moses' leadership, and that is the sense of the term.

Les explains that in classic Greek, the word baptizod was used by poets such as Homer and Aristotle, and many times it spoke of a ship being sunk at sea. The word really implies “totally engulfed.” When something is baptized, it is totally engulfed, though that did not always mean by water; in the spiritual realm it could mean a lot of things. Israel coming out of Egypt was spoken of as being baptized unto Moses, meaning the nation of Israel was totally engulfed in Moses’ leadership. In the same way, when believers are baptized into the body of Christ, they are totally engulfed—not just set up on the edge. By one Spirit all believers, Jew or Gentile, bond or free, are baptized into the one body and made to drink or partake of that work of the Holy Spirit.
