What is true about God's grace when sin abounds?

Paul shows that where sin abounds, God's grace is always greater. The old Adam abounds with sin, yet grace is not merely equal but surpasses it. As sin reigned like a king, even so grace might reign like a king.

Les explains that the old Adam abounds with sin, but where sin abounds, the grace of God is always greater. He illustrates this with soldiers in basic training who, away from home where nobody knows them, let the old Adam have free course; invading soldiers can likewise pillage and rape seemingly without bother. Every person before salvation would have been capable of the same things. Paul is showing that although the old Adam reigns like a king over us individually and over humanity, even so grace might reign like a king. These are two alternatives.
