How is our condition before salvation similar to Israel's situation at the Red Sea?
Before salvation, we were helpless, without strength, without hope, and unable to do anything to save ourselves, just as Israel was trapped at the Red Sea with the Egyptian army behind, mountains beside, and no way out. God alone opened the way, not by human effort, but by His grace through Christ.
Les explains that Israel stood on the shores of the Red Sea with the Egyptian army behind them, ready to destroy them, forbidding mountains to their right, and no possibility of going left. They were locked in, without strength, and did not know what to do. Instead of trying to build bridges or find a boat or raft, God told them to stand still and wait for His power. God opened the Red Sea, and Israel went through on dry ground. Les teaches that this is exactly where we found ourselves before salvation: without strength, without hope, helpless, and unable to do anything. Then God opens the way through His grace. In due time Christ died for the ungodly. The word ungodly means without God; it does not necessarily mean people are on skid row or have come to the end of themselves. They may be good people, the epitome of society, or the best of church members, but if they have never experienced God's saving grace, they are ungodly because they are without God in their lives. God saves the down and outer, the up and outer, and everything in between.
