What was Israel's situation at the Red Sea before God parted it?

Israel was trapped at the Red Sea: the sea in front, forbidding mountains on the side, and the Egyptian army behind. They had no place to go. God told Moses and the people to stand still, and by faith they waited for God to open the sea.

Les uses Israel at the Red Sea as an illustration of grace. Israel was trapped: the Red Sea was in front of them, forbidding mountains were on this side, almost the same on the left, and the Egyptian army was behind them. They had no place to go. Les points out that God did not scream at Moses and tell the people to do something. Instead He said, "Stand still," so that God would evidence His power. As Israel by faith stood still and did not frantically try to find driftwood to float across, they waited for the grace of God to open the Red Sea. Les then applies it: that is where we are today.
