Did Jesus die for humanity as a whole or for every individual?

He died for every individual. His death was not merely placing the human race under a general umbrella. Even if you were the only person on earth, Christ would still have gone through the work of the cross. This makes salvation personal, requiring each individual to believe the gospel.

Les explains that Christ did not just put the human race under an umbrella; He died for every individual. The cross was personal: if you would have been the only person on earth, Christ would still have gone through the work of the cross. That is what is called personal salvation, and it makes believing the gospel an individual responsibility. The context then illustrates this with Abraham, who believed God, and his believing was counted unto him for righteousness. God imputed to him the very righteousness of God Himself, so that he was justified not by doing something, but by believing what God said.
